I guess not too many young people, on their school vacation, go to cancer hospitals to entertain patients.

No, not many would do that, that's really great! cheers  A lot would perform at big charitable events because they usually get paid or at least a paid vacation with all expenses covered.

Very few stars donate their own time to visit patients. There is the odd exception though, this one in particular  sunny

As soon as I read Garth's post about Britney Spears I thought about Tay Tay at the Lady Cilento. Mr J Depp was there not too long ago, as well.

Her name in lights!!

I bet that a couple of months ago she would not have even dreamt this would be happening.

I remember seeing where she was so excited that 200 people had viewed her original version of "I don't know my name" on her youtube channel. Probably seems a long time ago to her.

Re: Grace VanderWaal

Some might think this is TLTR and that's ok.

Last Thursday morning I set off in the car for the drive to the airport. Lots of traffic so it took around two hours. Plane to Los Angeles 13 hours. Plane to New York 5 hours. Air train to Jamaica then LIRR to Penn Station. Then NJ Transit to Suffern. Got there about 8pm Thursday, no taxis around so walked to the main street. Found the theatre where the show was to take place and spoke to the guy running the concert. He told me there were no more tickets and that the concert was sold out. "Sorry but there is nothing I can do about it". I asked him if could at least contact the VanderWaals to see if they could do something about the situation. He told me he would ring me the next day to let me know if a ticket would be available. He did that and told me at 12.15 that he was able to get me a ticket. Grace had tweeted that she had reserved 50 tickets for out of town people and that they could pick them up on Saturday morning, first come first served, limit of 4 per customer and that is what I had in mind when I went to the US. Get there early Saturday morning and pick up a ticket.

Saturday morning I got there early to pick up my ticket and then waited across the road in a small park to see if anyone got there early to wait in a line. The tickets were GA seats so get there early for the best seats. First person turned up at 12 noon with four kids so I headed across the road to wait behind them. By the time it was about 4pm it was raining hard and the line stretched around the block. Then the thunder and lightening started. Luckily for us at the start of the line we were under the awning of the theatre. Doors opened around 4.45 and we got to get the best seats, fourth row. The first few rows were reserved for family, friends and other hangers on.

Grace comes on at 5.30 with "her" band. Her guitarist friend Dylan who is on some of her videos at the Bean Runner café, a drummer and double bass player. She plays a set (set list attached) and then does a Q&A with some members of the audience who have submitted questions for her. Intermission and I ask her sister, Olivia, if she could get Grace to sign a poster I had printed out before I left home. They announced that due to security concerns there would be no M&G even though Grace did want to do one. So Olivia came back with the signed poster and said that Grace wanted to see me after the concert. The concert finished with a set without the drums and bass and the last song was just her and "that" song.

I got a shout out, well about 4 or 5. She was so excited that someone would come from Australia to see her concert. I thought the whole thing was just brilliant. It was all "off the cuff", her comments were so natural and it was all just so much fun. The last 5 concerts I saw in the US were all for Jackie. They were all so formal, the banter was so obviously rehearsed and I enjoyed all of them but if I had to pick between Grace and Jackie right now, I would go with Grace.

After the show I waited around for a few minutes to see if she really wanted to see me. She did and I was ushered into a small room with just Grace and Dave, her father. She is really very small, much more than how she appears on AGT and she was so very excited to meet me. We spoke about lots of stuff including the fact I wasn't getting a ticket. Dave said that Ari had rung them to ask about me and that they had said of course I had to get one. She signed the set list I had asked for and then Dave shook my hand and asked my name and before I could get it out Grace told him. I shook her hand as well (didn't think it was appropriate to hug a 12yo girl) and that was it.

Next day I went to NYC to do a couple of things but it was raining when I got to Times Square, got a couple of souvenirs for some ppl and headed out to JFK to start the trip home.

This was Grace's first concert, there will be many more concerts but never another first. I was just so happy to have made the effort to be there. Will she win AGT? I have no idea but I do know she has a huge social media following. In a few weeks she has already surpassed the number of likes Jackie has gained in six years on Facebook and she is way more popular than any of the other singers on AGT (going on views and likes on Youtube)

Thanks for the great story of your trip, Bruce! cheers

Awesome that everything worked out and you got to meet Grace! bom

I am amazed that you were able to find your way around with all the distance and different transportation to get there. I probably would have gotten lost on my way to the airport. lol!

A couple more articles I hadn't seen before.

You will see that the first one was dated June 8 and at that stage the facebook version of her AGT song had over 125 million views. That figure should have increased considerably in the last two months.

Not the best production but as one person commented she is only 12 and is not being pushed into anything. I like that her parents are letting her do her own thing in her own time.

Here is another original. I haven't listened closely to the lyrics yet but it would appear from the comments that it relates to the younger fans. I think this is the most important point. Who cares if old people like me don't understand. If the youngins relate to her music then that's all that matters.
